Falling in Love

My oldest son and I were playing a silly game as we floated on the pontoon boat after dinner.  He would try to back up with the towel and I would playfully yank him back and yell, "Where do you think you're going!?  Get back here!"  He would tumble into my arms and we would giggle over and over again.  It takes a lot to get that child belly laughing and when he does, I'll keep it going as long as possible.  But something stopped him.

He froze in place and the smile fell from his face.  He looked at me seriously and said, "Mommy.  I think I'm falling in love with you."  I couldn't begin to explain in words what these words felt like to hear.  It was so moving and beautiful and overwhelming all at once.  I said, "I fell in love with you a long time ago, baby."  He cocked his head to the side and asked, "Mommy, how do you know when you are in love?"  Leave it to this one to ask me the tough questions.  I tried to simplify it as best I could and said, "It's when you're heart feels so full that it's going to burst."  This seems to settle something in his mind and he responded, "Yeah, then I'm definitely falling in love with you."  He jumped right back into the game without missing another beat.

I  have heard it said that four year old boys fall in love with their moms but this really did take me aback.  He has always been loving but his sweetness was so pure in this moment.  I can suddenly see why mothers cry when they give their sons away at their weddings.  There is nothing like the bond between a mother and her son.

How do your children express love to you?  Have they surprised you lately with something sweet and unexpected?
