Wanna Beer?

"Wanna beer?" I heard my oldest ask one of our neighbors.  We were at a neighborhood party and my oldest was ready to take everyone's orders.  "Sure!" my boisterous neighbor answered.  "Bring me a beer!"  My oldest scampered over to our cooler with purpose and pushed through the ice to grab a Miller Lite.  Prize in hand, he ran back to the neighbor and set it on the table in front of him.  "Here you go!" he said with a big smile on his face.  "Oh, I don't like blue beer.  Are there any with a red label?" my neighbor asked.  My son wasn't dissuaded.  He grabbed the Miller Lite and dashed back to the cooler.  After a few minutes, he found the Budweiser and brought it to our neighbor.  "Wow!"  the neighbor said.  "I didn't expect you to actually get it!  Thank you!"

My son made his way around all the tables of the party asking people if they wanted chips or maybe a fresh beer.  "He's going to be a great waiter!" someone said laughing.  But I think he's going to be even more than that.  Already, he's showing me how thoughtful he is.  He's showing me that other people's wants and needs are important to him and he's willing to go above and beyond to take care of them.  I can't tell you how refreshing this was to see.

Sometimes it feels like teaching a child to be kind is like teaching an elephant to shrink.  It just ain't happening.  But sometimes, when they don't think you are looking, they show you just how much they are watching and listening.  They display kindness without any need for acknowledgement.  This time, he wasn't doing it for a sticker or under the fear of punishment.  He just showed that he is, at his core, kind.

When was the last time you saw your kids display a random act of kindness?  Tuck that memory away to bring out when you think they may have been possessed by the devil.  You'll need it.

  1. What nice kids you have :) I love it when my kids surprise me by doing something thoughtful for others without any rewards for themselves.
