It's Complicated

Every Sunday morning, my husband drops me off at church early so that I can practice with the band then he takes the boys out to breakfast.  They go to the same diner every week and have gotten to know the staff very well.  My oldest orders the same thing each and every week: chocolate chip pancakes with syrup and bacon.  Lots of bacon.  This week, he decided to add a new twist.

The three of them sat down with their menus and the waitress came up to the table.  "How are you guys doing?" she asked.  "Luke, are you ready to order?"
"Yeah," he said, "but it's going to be a bit complicated this week."
"Oh really?  Are you ordering something different?" she asked him.
"I'll have chocolate chip pancakes, syrup and bacon.  Lots of bacon," he said in a deadpan voice.

She looked at him with a knitted brow and said, "But that's not complicated.  That's what you always order."
"I know," he replied.  "It was just a funny joke."

I laughed out loud when my husband told me that story because it was so out of character.  Our oldest is usually so straight forward and logical.  He laughs all the time but he usually doesn't understand that level of humor.  Suddenly his sense of a good joke is growing just as his body is growing.  There is nothing like watching a child evolve in every way.

How do you children make you laugh?  Does their evolving humor ever surprise you?
