Is That Baby Making You Sick?

One of my fears of a third pregnancy was the morning sickness.
It feels awful, it sneaks up on you and it lasts for way too long.  I just didn't know how I would manage my little boys while feeling sick.  My mom has always told me that when she was pregnant with me, she thanked God every time she threw up because she knew it meant that I was healthy.  I love her optimism but somehow I can't completely duplicate it.  Luckily, I am not throwing up but I do feel a constant queasiness that leads me to the bathroom and makes me wish I could just throw up and get it over with.  Still, I recently read that my mom is right.  The sicker you are, the healthier the baby.  So I'm doing my best to make peace with morning sickness.  And my four year old's concern is helping me make great strides in that direction.

The other night I was feeling particularly woozie and I laid down while my boys ran in circles around my bedroom.  My oldest stopped suddenly and ran over to me.  "Mommy, is that baby making you sick again?" he asked with compassion in his eyes.  "Yeah, but that's okay.  That's what brand new babies do.  You made me sick when you were brand new and so did your brother," I explained.  The concern stayed locked in his big brown eyes.  "Would you like me to make some of your special tea for you?" he asked earnestly.  I teared up immediately.  The only thing that has made me feel better is ginger tea and, without me even knowing it, he has been paying attention.  He knew exactly what I needed to feel better.

Morning sickness is still tough but knowing that I two wonderfully compassionate and understanding little boys that are willing to do anything for me makes it a little easier.  Not to mention an incredibly helpful husband and extended family (ahem, the best mom in the world).  And at the end of this, I will end up with another wonderful child that will surprise me with their kindness.  I think that's worth a few weeks of running to the bathroom.

Do you know any tricks to making it through morning sickness?  How did you handle it while juggling a job and/or other children?
