Bathtub Fingerpaints

We have been studying the ocean this week and I always like to incorporate some kind of art project into our lessons.  While I love this in concept, the clean-up can be a bit overwhelming.  I saw an idea about making bathtub fingerpaints and thought that would be a great way to incorporate ocean art.  We loaded the tub with toy sea creatures then set out to paint coral reefs, fish and, anything else they dreamed up.  Turns out there are railroads under the sea...Did you know that?

In case you would like to duplicate this fun with your kids, here's a simple way to do it.  Grab some cheap men's shaving cream (I found some at the dollar store) then fill up muffin tins with the shaving cream.  Drop a little food coloring into each container.  You can use it as an opportunity to make new colors and explain how primary colors can create any color in their imagination.  Stir up the mixture and hand it over to your little artists.

I made the mistake of stirring it with an old toothbrush and my little one was sure it was toothpaste.  That was a rude awakening for him.  Maybe you'll remember to bring a spoon!

Share your kids bathtub art on our Facebook page.  We'd love to see it!
