Random Act of Kindness

I went to the grocery store today and it was my first trip in many months. My husband is kind enough to take the boys every Saturday and give me an hour or so to myself. This weekend, however, my husband has a friend in town and so I offered to do the shopping.

I left with my list and clipped coupons and I was determined to stick to the list. And I did. Until I saw all the amazing deals. Buy one get one free juice! Fifty percent off granola bars! Brownies baked with sweet potato puree that I can use to trick my kids! Before I knew it, my cart was filled to the brim with nonsense food. I grabbed a box of Fruity Pebbles, our visitor's favorite, and felt a tap on my shoulder.

A woman, about 70 years old, was standing there with her arm outstretched. "Here honey, I have a $10 off coupon and it looks like you have a family at home to feed. Why don't you take it?" she asked. She explained that she had been trolling the store looking for a mom with kids to give her coupon to and when she saw the Fruity Pebbles, she knew I was the one. I gave her a big hug and told her how much it meant to have someone do something so kind for me, completely out of the blue. She blushed a little and told me it was her pleasure.

I am very rarely the recipient of a stranger's kindness. I must say, it was a wonderful treat. I felt so cared for in that moment and I'm even more moved to pay it forward.

Have you ever done something kind for a stranger? Have you ever received kindness from a stranger? I would love to hear your stories!
