Thank You Very Much

I wrote last week about wanting to teach my son how to express gratitude. I was preparing him for his birthday party but I saw a beautiful spontaneous display of it yesterday when his babysitter arrived with a small gift.

Every week she comes and they build with his "marble game". It's a really cool game filled with pieces that stack in an infinite number of combinations. You place a marble at the top and it spins around a funnel, dips around loopy loops and speeds through twisty paths on its way to the bottom. She patiently builds and rebuilds the marble game with the boys while they giggle and watch the marbles fall. She noticed that they were down to one marble and so she came with a baggie full of assorted marbles and interesting rocks for him. He was blown away.

"How did you know I needed marbles so much?" he asked her with wide eyes. "I love this so much. I really really do. Thank you so much," he said as they walked up the stairs to build yet another marble tower. Then he stopped, grabbed her hand and said, "I really love you, too."

His heart is so big and it is such a joy to watch him share it with other people. Although he loved all of his birthday gifts, he could see the thoughtfulness behind this one. He could see that she knew him well enough to give him something he truly loved. I'm going to remember this the next time I give a gift. It isn't about the cost or the size. It matters how much it represents the person I love and the things that we share.

What is the best gift you have ever received? What made it so special? How can you do that for the people in your life?
