The Artist's Way

I have been reading The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron after a recommendation from a friend and, although I am only a few weeks into the program, one simple thing has changed my life.  The book is designed to help people who would like to make a living through their art.  Some dream of acting, others of singing or writing or creating art.  The book's purpose is to help you to unblock your creativity and accept that you can support yourself doing something creative.  It appealed to me because I have always been happiest pursuing creative interests and someday I would like to make a living speaking and writing.  I thought this might give me some tools to make that happen.  But there was another benefit I didn't expect.  A clear mind.

The initial task is to write something called Morning Pages.  You wake up and write three pages of anything that comes to your mind.  It doesn't have to make sense or be grammatically correct.  It doesn't have to follow any flow that would make sense to someone reading over your shoulder and it is not meant to read.  These morning pages have become a ritual for me in the morning as I pour out everything on the page.  Sometimes I write things like, "I have to remember to send out the Christmas cards," and sometimes I find myself writing long and involved prayers.  I complain about injustices, pick out outfits, write posts for Perchable and plan my weekly menus.  I just write and write and write.

Miraculously, this has made an enormous difference in my ability to completely stay present in the moment during the day.  You see, I have already complained to someone who really listened.  I have already thought of all the things I have to do and let myself daydream.  My mind has been freed of all the junk so that I can focus on whatever it is that I'm doing at the moment.  It is truly a beautiful change of affairs for this Pisces that lives most of her life in her mind.

If your mind feels full, give it a try.  It's made me a better wife and mom and, I think, a better me.  I hope it does that for you, too.

God Bless!
