Family Pictures

I love to have family pictures done every year.  Scratch that - I love having the pictures, not the process.  Ever since my first son was born, family pictures have meant fighting through tears, saying "CHEEEEEESE," for an hour straight and trying to keep one or two little boys from running away from the camera.  I actually cried after our session last Christmas because it was such a mess.  The pictures were gorgeous - You would never know that my son tried to grab the "umbrella light" and crash it in the floor.  You would never know that my newborn wouldn't sleep for the peaceful newborn shot.  He just cried and pooped.  Four times.  So, when family pictures came up again this year, you can understand why my husband and I were a bit gun shy.

We found a local photographer that had very reasonable rates (1/3 of what we paid last year!) and she had a beautiful portfolio.  She was recommended by a coworker and we decided to go for it.  When I talked to her on the phone, I was immediately reassured.  She mentioned she had two little boys, 2 and 4, and that it always works best to shoot boys outside where they can run.  Genius.

We met at Selby Gardens in Sarasota and she asked us to just hang out and play and pose if the moment happened.  She brought little toys for the boys and asked them questions as she took their pictures.  There wasn't a moment of cajoling, crying or chaos.  It was actually relaxing.  I realized that she gave the kids respect and let them be kids.  They knew that right away and they wanted to please her.  Simple, but effective.   We got the pictures back today and I had to share a couple favorites with you.

I hope that your family picture session is free of chaos as well.  Even if that means using your iphone in front of your Christmas tree.  In the end, capturing their beautiful faces is all that matters.

If you are in the Sarasota area and would like to work with Jasmina, you can find her at www.lovelaughphotograph.com.
