Why I Became a Granny

Let’s start with the details. I have been married to P for 34 years and have 3 children, Son, who is 35(you do the math), #1, who is 33 and Baby, who just turned 30.  I have seven grandchildren by this crew, six boys and one girl ranging in age from 8 to 1.

I had loved being a mom but never gave much thought to being a grandmother.  When the topic came up with my friends I would honestly say I could wait or that I would be fine if they didn't have children.  I must have been smoking something. How could I have said that!!  One look at their little faces and I was in love.  The wake-them-up-when-they-are-tired-just-so-I-could-hold-them kind of love. The staring-into-their-unfocused-eyes-pledging-my-unending-love-and-monetary-support kind of love.  Even the I-am-going-to-exercise-so-I-will-live-to-be-a-hundred-and-see-them-get-their-first-social-security-check love.  (When you get to know me you will realize what a huge deal that is.)  I was a mess.  Make that I am a mess. I would never have believed it if I hadn't experienced it.

So what do you do with this kind of love?  Well, when you have owned and run companies for nearly 35 years you know exactly what to do:  you storyboard how to be the best grandmother in the universe. (I will teach you how to do that later).  It was during this process I realized I wanted to be a Granny.  Grannies are much more fun than grandmothers.  They laugh more often. They have no fear of dirt, worms, frogs and other slimy things alive and not.  They don’t really care if you pee in the bushes as long as no one sees you.  They can watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse for hours and do the Hot Dog Dance. They are all about memories-- great fun, messy, memories.

To be a Granny you must have the patience of Job, the mediating skills of a Supreme Court justice, the stamina of a good plow horse, the wit of Dorothy Parker, the focus of an Olympic gymnast and a sense of humor and irony that would make you the envy of any stand-up comic.  It is a vocation.  Am I always good at this?  Hell, no, but it is my goal and I hope over the months it will become yours.

Share with me your “Granny” moments and let’s see what trouble we can get into together.
