Teach Me More About God

I was reading to my oldest the other day when my cell phone rang.  It was my husband so I answered to see how his day was going.  He said to me, "You know, I never realized how hard it really is to be a good person."

He relayed a story about our flexible spending account (a benefit that allows you to put co-pays, glasses, prescriptions, etc. through a pre-tax account).  They had mailed us a check for almost $900 but my husband knew they had already paid us the reimbursement through an electronic funds transfer.  He called to let them know the mistake and the lady said, "No problem, just mail the check back to us and we'll electronically transfer the funds."  My husband continued to try and explain that they had already paid us and we couldn't keep the money.  It took four times.

He said to me, "It would have been so easy to take any of those opportunities to keep the money.  But it wasn't ours.  I couldn't do it."  I told him that I was so proud of him for being such a good man.  I said that God is always watching us and must be bursting with pride.  He was tempted but he didn't fall for the temptation.

I hung up the phone and saw two big brown 3 year old eyes staring at me.  He said, "Mommy, can you teach me more about God?"  Wow.  It was so apparent to me that parenting is also about what we say when we don't think they are listening and watching.  My husband and I are new to talking about God openly.  It's just starting to feel comfortable to us.  But we're going to keep on doing it because I want God to be a part of my children's every day life.  I want them to remember that even when we aren't watching, God is.  Ultimately, He is the one that will always be there to surround them with love.

How do you inject messages about faith into your family life?
